A PREGNANT VIRGIN?

“Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son.” – Matthew 1:23; Isaiah 7:14

How would you have liked to be in Mary’s position, to break the incredible news to your husband-to-be that you are pregnant but never had sex with anyone? In today’s society you might have been able to squeeze bye with the artificial insemination line as an explanation for your condition; but back then that was unheard of. At any rate, which soon-to-be husband would welcome the news that his intended bride is pregnant for someone else—let alone to hear that the baby’s real father is someone as far-fetched as the Holy Ghost? On her own, Mary could have provided absolutely no justifiable answer for her pregnancy. A pregnant virgin? Give me a BIG break! Are you from Mars or something?

This one could have never flown, no matter what type of wings were to be attached to it. It took the Almighty, through the ministry of angel Gabriel, to break this unbelievable news to Joseph, while he was considering to “dump” Mary secretly. Gabriel had to remind this dazed, anxious man of Isaiah’s prophecy concerning this most remarkable pregnancy: “Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14).

Let’s face it. It is not a very easy thing to break to others (family or friend) that you are heavy with child, fathered by the Holy Spirit. How do you explain to someone that you are a pregnant virgin? You will most likely get the whimsical look that says: “You are kidding, right?” Imagine for a moment, a husband telling his wife one morning, “Honey, I have something very important to tell you.” I could hear her saying, “what is it, dear?” He looks her straight in the eye and says, “I believe I am pregnant;” and before he could even say another word, she falls out of the bed laughing uncontrollably.

Yet, this is not a funny situation at all. Firstly, the Bible does call believers (male and female) virgins, in the sense that they all carry God’s virgin life in their spirit (Revelation 22:1-5; Matthew 25:1-5). Secondly, whenever the anointing of the Holy Ghost overshadows the believer, indeed he becomes pregnant with some seed to produce a fruitful harvest in God’s kingdom field. The truth is, many people are pregnant and don’t even know it. Some have even given birth to some great things for God and may still be unaware that they had carried some holy seed in them.

Whenever you miss a “cycle” (or period) of sin or rebellion toward God, chances are the Holy Spirit may be conceiving something new in you; and God may be getting ready to bring forth some fruit in your life. You may even experience some labor pains (trials), but the child would be born—to your joy and the blessing of others, and to God’s glory.

Be a wise and faithful virgin. One day, not very long from now, you may find yourself standing on Mount Zion with Jesus the Lamb, singing a new song before the throne of the eternal God, with His name sealed in your forehead. I want to be there; don’t you?
