WHO IS YOUR MASTER?

Written By Ruthven Roy on April 28th, 2010

Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?” – Romans 6:16

Read First: Matthew 6:24

The implied assumption of the scriptural heading is that everyone is a servant of either one of two masters—that is, sin or righteousness. The thought processes and decisions that drive one’s attitude and daily actions reflect one’s allegiance or servitude to one or the other of these masters. Many professed Christians attempt the impossible by trying to serve God and self (the servant of Satan) at the same time. While Satan is quite open to accommodate dual allegiance, even when it is lopsided in God’s favor, Christ demands lordship of all or no lordship at all! This inflexible stance formed the centerpiece of His Kingdom message in His Sermon on the Mount. All who enter Kingdom life must vow loyalty to God alone, the One who delivered them from the kingdom of darkness, and safely transported them into the Kingdom of His dear Son, Jesus Christ (Colossians 1:13). “You cannot serve God and mammon” (Matthew 6:24).

Relentless pursuit of the surrogate masters of the evil one in this world—wealth, fame and ungodly pleasure—alienate one from God (James 4:4). Everything from the world feeds either the lust or the pride of man (1 John 2:15-17). Therefore, is it any wonder that the Bible says that the believer should focus his attention on the things above and not on the things on this earth (Colossians 3:2)? For sure, everyone has a master that he/she obeys. Which one is yours?
